What is a chemical peel?

Slow the signs of aging

Compliment your injections

We’ll admit it… the words “chemical” and “peel” together as part of a skin care procedure sound scary so let’s break it down and talk about how they work and what they do so chemical peels aren’t so intimidating.  The service itself is very similar to what you’d experience if you had a traditional facial.   The difference is the products used during the service.

A chemical peel is a medical grade solution that is applied to your skin during a facial service.  As it begins to work, it gently removes the top layer of your skin through an exfoliation process.  Removing the top of layer of skin, which is often dull and dry, tells your skin it’s time to regrow a new fresh layer of healthy skin.  The new layer of skin comes back smoother, tighter and with a more even tone revealing more youthful, glowing skin.

One and done?

You should see an improvement in your skin after one chemical peel.  Depending on the condition of your skin and what you’re hoping to achieve, you will most likely need a series of treatments to get to your desired result.  Most clients need between 4 to 6 peels, several weeks apart.  Fall into winter is the perfect time to start a peel series as they need to be done when you won’t be exposed to much sun.

FAQs

What should I expect after my peel?

In the days following your peel, you may notice that your skin feels tight and looks a little red.  There may even be some minor swelling and irritation.  Your skin may become flakey and begin to peel similar to what happens after you get a sun burn.  This is all normal and part of the process.  Within a week to two weeks post procedure, your skin will begin rejuvenate itself and you’ll start to see the benefits of the treatment.

Do I need to plan for downtime after a chemical peel?

Everyone responds and heals differently so it’s hard to say exactly how much time you’ll need, but yes, because your skin may get worse before it gets better, we recommend you plan for at least 2 weeks of downtime after a chemical peel.  This doesn’t mean you can’t leave your house.  This just means your skin may be less than perfect for about two weeks after your treatment.  That said, you shouldn’t don’t schedule a chemical peel a week before your wedding because your skin may not be picture ready in time.
